7 ways to avoid roaming charges on your next trip
Roaming bills of €100+ are still shockingly common. A few settings and one QR code are all it takes to never pay one again.
Mobile operators earn billions from travelers who do nothing before flying. The fixes take ten minutes, and most of them are free.
1. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM
The single most important setting. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → your home line → Data Roaming OFF. On Android it's under Mobile networks. Your travel eSIM handles data; the home SIM only needs to receive calls and SMS.
2. Use a prepaid travel eSIM for data
A prepaid eSIM is capped by design — when the data runs out, it stops. Nothing can surprise-bill you. Local plans start around a euro or two for short trips.
3. Watch out for Wi-Fi Assist and background sync
Phones quietly switch to cellular when hotel Wi-Fi is weak, and cloud photo backups can eat gigabytes. Disable Wi-Fi Assist and set backups to Wi-Fi-only before you travel.
4. Download maps and translations offline
Google Maps lets you download whole regions; translation apps work fully offline. Do it on home Wi-Fi and your most data-hungry travel apps become free.
5. Beware cruise ships and planes
Satellite networks on ships and flights are NOT covered by any normal plan — they bill your home operator at extreme rates. Airplane mode is your friend at sea.
6. Hotspot from one plan, not four
Traveling as a family? One generous eSIM plan with tethering can serve everyone's browsing at a café stop — cheaper than four separate roaming packs.
7. Check usage as you go
Your order page shows the plan size; your phone's data-usage screen shows consumption per app. Thirty seconds of checking mid-trip beats surprises at the end.
